Age Spots
Age spots are often caused due to excess production of melanin, or skin pigment. There is no
certified report on what develops age spots, but doctors believe that aging, sun exposure, and UV-
rays exposure are primary factors that trigger age spots in both men and women.
People of any age or race can get affected by this skin condition, but the following category of
people is at higher risk:
- Fair-skinned person
- An individual older than 40 years
- A person with frequent sun exposure
- A person who uses tanning beds very frequently
Diagnosis and Treatment
At Skinovate, we first examine the patient's skin condition, and if they find something suspicious, we
may suggest a biopsy. A biopsy test involves removing a small piece of your skin and examines it for
cancer or any other abnormalities. Depending on your reports and diagnosis, our expert may suggest
one of the following treatments to lighten or remove the age spots:
Medicines: You may get prescribed some bleaching creams that contain hydroquinone alone or with
retinoid (tretinoin) along with a mild steroid. These creams may gradually fade the spots over
several months. However, the medicines may cause temporary itching, redness, burning, or dryness.
Laser and Intense Pulsed Light: A laser therapy help destroy melanin-producing cells (melanocytes)
without causing damage to your skin surface. For enhanced results, you may require 3-4 sessions of
this treatment.
Cryotherapy: This procedure involves using a cotton-tipped swab dipped under liquid nitrogen and
applied on the spots for 4-5 seconds. This treatment help destroy the spots, and as you heal, the
marks fade away, and the skin appears lighter. The procedure may irritate your skin, and if not
performed under expert supervision, it may also cause skin discoloration or permanent scarring.
Dermabrasion: This treatment involves sanding down the surface layer of skin with a rapidly rotating
brush. During your healing period, new skin grows in its place. This procedure may require multiple
sessions to achieve desired results. The possible side effects include temporary redness, scabbing
and swelling.
Microdermabrasion: It is a less aggressive approach than dermabrasion. The treatment includes
leaving mild skin blemishes with a smoother appearance. To get desired results, you may need
multiple sessions over months. Many patients complain of a slight redness or stinging sensation on
the treated areas, which eventually gets better with time and some OTC medicines. Patients
suffering from rosacea or tiny red veins should not sign up for this procedure.
Chemical Peeling: This procedure involves applying a chemical solution to the skin to remove the top
layers. Over time, new, smoother skin forms to take its place. Some patients experience scarring,
infection, and lightening or darkening of skin color.
All the above skin treatments avail some form of risk and side-effects. To avoid such risks, choose a
