Melasma
Treatment in Pune
Our dermatologists can diagnose melasma in most patients by looking at their skin. To see how deeply the melasma penetrates your skin, the dermatologist may look at your skin using a device called a Wood’s light.
Often melasma looks like any other skin condition. To rule out other possibilities, our dermatologist may need to remove a small bit of skin. This procedure is called a skin biopsy, and your dermatologist can safely and quickly perform a skin biopsy during an office visit.
Melasma is also called chloasma, or the “mask of pregnancy,” when it occurs in pregnant women. The condition is more common in women than in men. However, men can develop this condition in some rare scenarios.
Symptoms
Melasma causes skin discoloration or patches on the affected region. Other areas of your body that often get exposed to the sun can also develop melasma. The brownish-colored patches mostly occur on:
- Cheeks
- Forehead
- Chin
- Bridge of the nose
Skin discoloration doesn’t harm the body, but it may make you feel self-conscious about your looks.
Causes
- Pregnancy
- Heavy consumption of birth control pills
- Direct exposure to the sun and UV-rays
- Hormone therapy
- Stress
- Thyroid disease
- Dark skin tone
Treatment
For some women, melasma disappears on its own. It typically occurs during pregnancy or heavy consumption of birth control pills.
There are creams our healthcare professional may prescribe that can lighten the skin. They might also prescribe topical steroids to help lighten the affected areas. If these don’t work, chemical peels, dermabrasion, and microdermabrasion are possible effective options. These treatments strip away the top layers of skin and may help lighten dark patches.
However, these procedures don’t guarantee that melasma won’t come back. You might have to return for follow-up visits and stick to certain skincare practices to reduce the melasma risk. The skin care tips include minimizing your sun exposure and wearing sunscreen daily.
